WARTS

Plantar warts or verrucae are caused by papillomavirus group (HPV). They are very contagious and enter the layers of the skin by a entry portal such as a break in the skin.

Presentation:

  • Skin lines or ‘fingerprint pattern’ moves around the lesion
  • May have multiple centres
  • The core may have bruising or haemorrhages at the base
  • Pain occurs with side to side squeezes
  • May have callous around the wart

If you think you have a wart, it is particularly important to keep it covered while it is being treated to prevent it spreading to other members of the household. 

Treatment is customised and will require individual assessment. Most commonly, for a pain free wart, no treatment is required as body will most likely spontaneous remove it itself. If active treatment is required, it may include:

  • Offloading with paddings
  • Topical applications such as salicylic acid
  • Referral to GP for cryotherapy
  • Callous removal

Start by looking at your feet every day.

Use a mirror to check the bottom of your feet. Can you see any cracks, sores, infections, or peeling or dry skin?

This is especially important if you have diabetes or chronic health issues.

Every month at Total Care Podiatry we run a complimentary morning clinic to support the little feet that run around our community. We run short appointments designed to be a screening check of any areas of concern you may have for your child’s feet. 

Commonly we check for:

Before you begin to encourage your family to move more, check everyone’s shoes still fit well and are fit for purpose.

Kids feet grow fast, so check to see if there is a thumb widths breadth from the longest toe to the tip of the shoe.

Take advantage of our FREE foot check for all students

Problems with your child’s feet could become problems for life if not treated early. Foot conditions have the potential to develop into knee, hip and back pain that can have serious consequences on development and posture. Bones and joints in children are constantly growing and are not fully developed until adulthood.

Every school term there will be some kind of change in growing feet, particularly in the 8-12 age bracket. After the summer break, spent mostly barefoot or in thongs, it’s good to remeasure feet and purchase correct fitting school and sports shoes for the upcoming year.

Tips for purchasing shoes at any age:

  • Choose a store that measures foot length and width to ensure best fit
  • Buy shoes in the afternoon as the foot may be larger at this time
  • Always walk around in the shoes at home on the carpet, checking for comfort and tight spots – if any issues develop take them back!
  • When standing you should be able to wriggle your toes
  • Ensure the sole of the shoe is firm and bends across the ball of the foot
  • The material breathes and is flexible/durable

*Wear hand-me-down shoes with caution. An old shoe belonging to someone else will take on their shape and gait, which will not be the same as the new wearer. Buying a new shoe is recommended.

TIP THREE

Pain can be a subjective experience, yet no matter how it is packaged it shouldn’t be ignored. To avoid pain it is important to have shoes that fit well and are comfortable, since pain in your feet can trigger a ‘chain effect’ of pain elsewhere such as in your hips or knees.

DO

  • Rest tired feet and legs, particularly if you stand for long periods of time
  • Explore what triggers any foot pain and make note of this for your podiatrist
  • Consider applying ice packs to areas of swelling or inflammation

DONT

  • Ignore pain, since it is your body’s way of letting you know something needs investigation
  • Assume hip and knee pain isnt connected to your feet or the way you walk
  • Believe all pain is ‘bad’, your podiatrist may advise you to safely work through your foot pain

TIP TWO

Correctly fitted shoes can make a big difference to your foot health. In fact, up to twice your bodyweight in force is applied through your feet and legs with every step. And did you know that your longest toe may not necessarily be your big toe? Bear this in mind when being fitted for shoes.

DO

  • Make sure that there is about 1.5 centimetres (thumb width) of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe
  • Test your shoes on a range of surfaces to see how they feel
  • Check that the widest part of the shoe sits where the ball of your foot is

DONT

  • Underestimate comfort, as evidence shoes that shoe comfort can help reduce the risk of injury
  • Ignore any pain signals. If you have pain in your feet, see your podiatrist
  • forget to check that your shoes bend to keep comfortable

TIP ONE

Let’s talk toenails…Not the most delightful topic, but oh so important when it comes to looking after your foot health.

Did you know that fungal nail infection happens when the nail becomes discoloured, thickened and brittle? Here is how to minimise your chances of this happening.

DO

  • Wash and dry your feet thoroughly
  • Wear flip flops in public showers or pool areas
  • Dry your socks in the sunlight, since UV is a natural fungus killer!
  • Consider adding tea tree oil to your moisturiser, in your next load of sock washing, or even using a diluted tea tree oil spray on your feet to help reduce the risk of a fungal infection

DONT

  • Go barefoot in public showers or pool areas
  • Wear the same socks two days in a row
  • Dry your socks inside out of direct sunlight
  • Share shoes

FLAT FEET – Symptoms and Treatment

FLAT FEET

Flat feet are very common in children as they develop proper foot structure and muscle strength. Children may have a ‘collapsed arch’ or rolled in ankles. This is often associated with decreased muscle strength and joint flexibility. 

Symptoms

  • Reduced walking pace
  • Clumsy or tripping
  • Pain in the feet, knees, hips or back
  • Blistering in shoes
  • Joint enlargement

Treatment for flat feet in children follows one of three pathways depending on the child’s presentation:
1) No treatment may be required
2) The child may be monitored for a set period to see if there is any change or if they ‘grow out of it’
3) Treatment and ongoing care is needed

Treatments may include:

  • Orthotics
  • Footwear recommendations
  • Activity modifications
  • Exercises and/or stretches
